On Tuesday, 6/23, federal health officials reported a “disturbing surge” of COVID-19 infections in many parts of the country, especially in Florida, Texas, and Arizona, as states began to reopen and the public ignored social distancing and face mask guidelines. On the same day, the US had recorded the highest number of new cases in one day since April 25th, prompting the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, to state that the US is still in its first wave of cases, as it has yet to decrease the number of daily infections and deaths to an appropriate level.

While some White House officials have claimed that the surge in cases comes as a result of the increase in COVID-19 testing, health officials have reached a general consensus that the new outbreaks are caused by the public congregating in small spaces, failing to follow social distance guidelines, and failing to consistently wear masks in public. As more states continue to ease lockdown orders, the number of cases will continue to surge if public health guidelines are not effectively followed.
