The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has authorized pharmacists to order and administer COVID-19 vaccinations to patients aged three and older, once the vaccine becomes available. This authorization was made in order to expand on the efforts of HHS to deliver a safe and widely available COVID-19 vaccine to Americans by 2021. Prior to administering the vaccine, pharmacists must complete a training program of at least 20 hours, approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, and complete at least 2 hours of ACPE-approved immunization-related continuing education.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacies have played an important role in meeting the needs of patients and increasing access to care. This announcement by HHS has added to the recognition of pharmacists’ important role during the pandemic and will increase the availability of the vaccine to Americans once it becomes available.
